Carmacks is a town of 426 people living on the land where the Yukon River meets the Nordensckiold River, and where one of the four bridges across the Yukon spans the River.  It's around 180 km (111.8 mi.) north of Whitehorse and is a highway transportation hub for the Yukon.  Mining of coal, copper, and gold historically and currently form the base of the local economy.

Carmacks is partly known for its scenic 2.2 km (1.4 mi.) long boardwalk along the Yukon River, with historical signs at the many rest stops along the route telling Carmack's history.  The Tage Cho Judan Interpretive Center also shares the local Northern Tutchone culture's history with visitors.  The Nordenskiold River valley to the south of town is an important wetland waterfowl staging and nesting area, and is on Little Salmon/Carmacks First Nation settlement land.  Canoeists will enjoy several trips around Carmacks, including running the Five Finger Rapids downriver from town, or taking a day trip that may include canoeing to Faro.  Fishing fans will enjoy fishing in the Rivers or at several nearby lakes.  Rock hounds will enjoy exploring local trails for agates and other minerals.  In wintertime, be sure to look skywards at night for the aurora borealis.
