Located where the Alaska Highway meets the Haines Highway, Haines Junction is a town of 789 people living 158 km (98.2 mi.) west of Whitehorse.  Tourism is one of its economic bases, with the town being located next to Kluane National Park and Reserve.

Kluane is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, famous for having beautiful glaciers, mountains, wildlife, and also being the home of Canada's highest peak Mount Logan.  An ice field with glaciers can be found in several mountain valleys.  Outdoors enthusiasts can enjoy hiking, mountain biking, and river rafting in the summer and snowmobiling and cross-country skiing in the winter.  Haines Junction offers tourists several attractions as well.  The Haines Junction Visitor Reception Centre has a topographical map and displays of Kluane's natural and cultural history.  The Centre's picnic area has spectacular views of the mountains.  The Village Monument is a large sculpture of a mountain with local wildlife standing on its ledges.  A picnic area is nearby.  There are several interesting local churches, including St. Christopher's Anglican Church on the Alaska Highway which is an eight sided log church designed and built by a local craftsman.  Visitors can also enjoy several annual events including a music festival and a road relay.
